Today, you had your test on the Protest Songs sequence.
You listened to a song and had to write your review of the song.

You had to work on John Mayer's song Waiting on the World to Change.

Here are the lyrics and a short biography of the singer.

And you can listen to the song again by clicking below.

I hope you liked it !

Today, you had to work by groups to create a short dialogue on musical tastes.
You had some vocabulary to use.

You did it pretty well, so I decided to put them on the blog.

Today, we worked on the song Mother Father
by Dave Matthews Band (DMB).
You first listened to it once and you had to tell everything
you understood and to concentrate on the music.
You told me about the evolution of the music in the song
(the music seems to be angrier at the end)
and about the main musical instruments you heard
(the guitar and the drums).
You tried to guess what the theme was with the keywords you heard.
You then had a fill in the gaps text of the lyrics to complete.
Here is the document

And you can here the listen again by clicking below

Hope you liked the song !

HW: You have to finish completing the music vocabulary grid
+ to find all the antonyms and the different themes treated in the song.

You can also train yourselves by making this online exercise !

As I will be away for a whole week (for my exams)
you will have to work on your own on your first task.
Here is what you will have to do.
Choose your partners (3 or 4 per group)

Task 1 :

Now you know more about history of American music, you will have to make a timeline thanks to the document ‘Songs of freedom’ we studied in class and thanks to the internet.

You will begin your timeline in 1619 and finish in the 21st century. You must use the passive form to present the events and make a sentence to describe each event.

Here are some internet links to help you:

(click on the pictures to see the links)

Make it as enjoyable as possible (you can use colours, pictures, etc…) as the best one will be chosen to be copied and pasted in your copybook !!

GOOD LUCK !!

Today, we worked on protest songs.

I first told you what your future task will be:

You will have to choose your favourite protest song
and analyse it.

You will have to talk about the singer / the band, the context, the lyrics etc.

We then listened to some of them and briefly told
what they were criticizing or denouncing.
Here is the vocabulary we used to do so:
(don't forget to learn these structures by heart !!)

to reproach somebody for / with doing sthg
to blame somebody for doing sthg
to criticize somebody for doing sthg
to accuse somebody of doing sthg

Here is the site we used to listen to these songs:
Protest_songs.jpg(Thanks to V. GELY for her great work !)

You can listen to them again and to the others
and try to train yourselves !
And here is a link that could help you find a song for your work:

Today, we began our new sequence entitled:
"from work songs to protest songs".

We watched the very beginning of O'Brother,
and made a brainstorming to try and define the work songs.
You can take a look at the extract again by clicking below.

We then worked on an audio document
and you had to explain what it was about.

HW: You have to read the document entitled "Let my people go"
